Get Off My Lawn

I can't tell if he's laughing or crying.

Things That Made Me Happy and Sad These Past Two Weeks

Things that have made me sad:

  • An Edmonton police officer was shot and killed while serving a warrant. The nut job who shot him was one of Freemen on the Land, a quasi militia group that is dedicated to hate and does not recognize the authority of the government. This was the first Edmonton police officer killed in the line of duty in 25 years.

Things that have made me happy:

  • I saw Mad Max: Fury Road. It was visually stunning and the writing was decent.
  • I saw Jurassic World. It was visually stunning and mostly a lot of fun but the writing was atrocious and sexist. The dinosaurs stole the show and turned in some great performances. I hear there’s even some Oscar buzz for the raptors.
  • I finally got a PlayStation 4.
  • We bought a Sodastream and I made myself some pop.
  • The Toronto Blue Jays are on an 11-game winning streak and are scoring upwards of ten runs per game.

For the most part, life has been good in the past little while. It’s been difficult to find anything to complain about but I will continue to try. Cheers.

  1. Oscar buzz for the raptors! 😂 I liked it okay. Better than movies two and three but a definite step behind the first. In my opinion.

  2. Sorry for the fallen officer.
I too watched the Fury Road and loved it.

  3. The hubs and I went to see Mad Max last Sunday. It was non-stop action from basically the first scene. By the end of the film I was exhausted from seat-fighting to assist.

  4. So sad about that police officer. How horrible for his friends and family. Such a tragedy.

I saw Jurassic Park over the weekend. I liked it, and I thought the female character was much better than what they had in San Andreas. That was two hours of men saving damsels in distress, not to mention two hours of cliches. And yet others loved the movie. To each his/her own, I guess. Thank goodness there’s something for all of us!

  5. And I thought whackos like the Freemen were limited to the United States. Sorry to see they’re in your neck of the woods also. They are total nutjobs. We get letters from them at work every week. And they get loonier and loonier every year.

    • The news said there are about thirty thousand here in Canada. About two years ago an RCMP officer in rural Alberta was shot by a Freeman. The police here are really concerned.

      • About eight years ago, I started writing a novel about a string of terrorist attacks across the United States. At the time, my terrorist group was Muslim. I got about halfway through and put it to the side because was getting bogged down in the details. Lots of moving parts. I still want to finish the story some day, but the terrorist group will change to a Freemen type of group — I consider them far more dangerous than Muslim terrorists.

  6. Your Jays are up on my Dbacks 4 games. We’ve won 3 in a row but…11? Wow! That is something to be happy about. And I’m so sorry for the loss of your police officer. May all who love and miss him be comforted in their time of need ❤

  10. Owen and I are going to Fork and Screen this weekend on our vacation (a movie theater that is in iMax and they serve you dinner and cocktails in recliners) and I debated on seeing Jurassic World. It is not my type of movie, but he liked the first one. I hesitate because last year I got drunk on wine at the pool (because it was my birthday and people kept buying them for me while Owen had organized the whole pool of strangers into a game of throwing his football) and then I let him order Divergent on the TV. He felt so big to get to order pay per view in the hotel. I couldn’t feel my lips but I ate cheesecake and watched it with him and I don’t think it was bad….but my ex fucking flipped when he heard that he watched it. He admitted he had not actually seen it but based on the ratings he felt I was being inappropriate by letting him watch it. So….I don’t want this dino movie to cause a big fucking issue. He’s a tool.

    • The violence involving people is pretty tame. Even the dinasour on dinasour violence is pretty tame. He’s a young boy so I don’t see how you can’t take him to Jurassic World. I don’t understand why your ex would flip out over Divergent. We watched here for “bad movie night.” It’s pretty tame.

      • He once told me I was horrifying him with How the Grinch Stole Christmas and that Hook was too violent. Transformers are ok…but Peter Pan is not, apparently. When I was 7 my favorite movie was Silence of the Lambs, so I might have a skewed sense of what is ok…but I feel like if you watch it with them, answer any questions they have, and turn it off it they get scared, then it is ok. He’s just a douche. I just don’t want Owen to feel like he cant’ go back to his house Sunday and feel excited about what we did because his dad is going to shit all over it.

      • Ugh! That is a shitty situation. Poor Owen. I remember going to see Jaws in the theatre when I was like eight. It was fantastic AND it scared the shit out of me. It was such a fun time.

      • We are going to the T-Rex cafe so I think a Jurassic theater experience would be fun. We shall see what else is playing. I’m most looking forward to the baseball game

  13. I sometimes think organizations like the Freeman exist because people think they have a right to act stupidly.

  14. Those Freemen of the Land sound ridiculous. Going to Google them after I post this comment.

I haven’t seen either of those movies, am still playing on my PS3 (once in a while) and have no soda stream. However, the Warriors are technically my team and they won the NBA Finals (coming from the Silicon Valley, I root for them over other teams in the NBA, but I pay very little attention).

  15. The sad thing was really sad. We had a trooper killed at a gas station here – thought it was a random crime and it turned out that he was having an affair.
The rest was your usual gibberish – what are the blue jays? Other than noisy birds.
