I can't tell if he's laughing or crying.

Mad Max and Left Behind

Yesterday we saw a preview for the Mad Max reboot coming to theatres this summer. I’ve been meaning to get around to, but never seemed to have the time, thanking Australia for giving us a franchise that was not only a pioneer in the post-apocalyptic/wasteland genre, but also a quirky, funny, outrageously violent film that also embodied a kind of minimal artistry that had a lasting effect. So thanks, Australia.

Today we are having “Bad Movie Night” and our selection is Left Behind, starring the king of all that is crap cinema, Nicolas Cage. I can’t think of a better way to usher in the new year than howling at a premise that is a fundamentalist Christian revenge fantasy starring the hairy and over earnest, over acting Nicolas Cage. It will be tough to beat After Earth but I’m confident Left Behind is up to the task.

Happy New Year, people.

  1. Hmm, I think I read ‘Left Behind’ years ago. I don’t recall being that enamored with it. Enjoy the movie. I hope you and Nicholas have fun together.

    • It was spectacularly awful. And it was funny. I don’t think they intended it to be funny but it was. Oh, and I learned that moments after the rapture instead of trying to fiure out what the helk happened, everyone left behind will riot and run around screaming.

  4. Happy New Year! I agree, Nicholas Cage is the King of Crap movies. I am itching to see American Sniper but our stupid theater won’t get it.

  5. They made a movie from the book, oh my. Nicholas Cage? Give me Mel Gibson in his prime and Tina Turner singing “We don’t need another hero” in the background.

  8. In my opinion, Cage peaked with “Raising Arizona”. It’s always disheartening to see a performer begin to take him or herself to seriously.
